Name: Alex D. Molnar
Major: Industrial and Systems Engineering
College: Russ College of Engineering and Technology

Favorite thing about Athens:
The small-town feel paired with the large-university opportunities and the friendly, diverse, and accepting community that surrounds Ohio University, the place we call Athens.

What is something you have learned while at Ohio University that you would like to share with fellow Bobcats?

While at Ohio University, I have learned that being different is more than okay, it is wonderful – being different is what makes you, you. If the world were full of a single type of person, it would be static and boring. Embrace the differences within yourself and others, stand out, and do what makes you happy. Just remember one thing, stay true to yourself, don’t change for the whims of others. In all cases, you have to be an advocate for yourself: be selfish in that you care for yourself, so you can do the most good for others.

Favorite thing about Athens:
The international community and the scenery.

What is something you have learned while at Ohio University that you would like to share with fellow Bobcats?

Don't sell yourself short and seek every opportunity possible. There are many opportunities for growth and education at Ohio University that many students do not seek or exploit, and it is a great shame.

What is something you have learned while at Ohio University that you would like to share with fellow Bobcats?

You set the standards for what it means to be successful, and you decide whether or not to live up to your word.  Find your niche, work hard, always exude confidence, and lastly, strive to be a mentor and leader in all that you do-- because each and every bobcat has a story to tell and a lesson to learn.  Thanks to my parents, my lifelong friends in SMO and Section 8, Elahu Sustarsic and Katrina Heilmeier for teaching me these lessons and infinitely more in your own unique ways.

Favorite thing about Athens:
The people! I'm amazed by the loving best friends that I have made here. The strangers treat me like an old friend too. The inhabitants of a place are what make it special.

What is something you have learned while at Ohio University that you would like to share with fellow Bobcats?

I've learned that you never know what the person next to you is going through. Everyone has their own unique life experiences, and we should always reflect before making judgments. It never hurts to stop and ask how someone is doing because everyone needs a reminder that someone cares about them.

Favorite thing about Athens: My favorite aspect of Athens is the overall atmosphere. Athens is unlike any other college town in the US. We have a wide range of local businesses that provide local foods which are incredible. The city itself is absolutely gorgeous, surrounded by the hocking hills and the streets paved with bricks. You cannot find another place like Athens, Ohio in the world.

What is something you have learned while at Ohio University that you would like to share with fellow Bobcats?

Leadership and how to overcome defeat. Through my tenure on Student Senate I was able to create the Residential Housing Advisory Board that helped push high definition television into the residence halls. We worked with Residential Housing on various projects ranging from the Master Housing Plan to renovations in places such as Bromley Hall. Through my time on Honor Council I was able to rewrite the Ohio University Honor Code to make it easier for students to understand. All of this led to me running for president of Ohio University’s Student Senate. Through the loss of that election I learned how to continue pushing on, and progress towards real change here at Ohio University. I learned that no matter what the outcome, it is also up to you to decide if you are willing to push on or falter, OHIO gave me the ability to push on.

Favorite thing about Athens:
The unbeatably delicious cuisine! Some of my personal favorites are Bagel Street Deli, Sol, Brennen's, and Lui Lui.

What is something you have learned while at Ohio University that you would like to share with fellow Bobcats?

Ohio University is part of the Athens Community. They participate in the Bobcat culture by supporting our sports teams , student organizations, and so much more. And so in turn, we need to be mindful to give back just as much, if not more, to the community.

During my time in Athens, I have learned what it means to be a Bobcat. To me, being a Bobcat first and foremost means being proud of where we come from, appreciative of the opportunities we are given, and supportive of others. From football games to Saturdays at Strouds, we take advantage of our campus as well as our community. A great example of this is UPC’s “100 Things to do Before You Graduate” list, on which half of the tasks require leaving campus. (I’m proud to say that I’ve finished 77 tasks on the list already). There are just as many opportunities off-campus in Athens as there are on. We Bobcats don’t stay in our own bubble, we reach out and make the most of our time here, soaking up as much of the experience as we can. We know that we are getting a great experience in a one-of-a-kind place. Being in a college town where there is real need within the community, we have the opportunity to give back and make a real difference, something that I truly believe we Bobcats do. And whether we are volunteering for the Humane Society, or donating our clothes before running down Court Street [nearly] Naked, we have fun doing it. Bobcats legitimately love their school, and their fellow OU students/alumni/staff. Bobcats are grateful for the time they spend here. And Bobcats know that there’s no place like Athens.

Favorite thing about Athens:
How beautiful Athens becomes in the fall.

What is something you have learned while at Ohio University that you would like to share with fellow Bobcats?

The best lesson I have learned during my time at Ohio University is to always 'pay it forward.' I have been extremely fortunate to have learned and be mentored by Ohio University faculty, staff, alumni and my fellow peers. I do not believe I could have been as successful and confident as I am now if I did not have people who dedicated the time and effort to ensure that I would become the best version of myself. I take pride in helping others and will always continue the tradition of helping others that has so helped me.

Major: Business Administration
College: Honors Tutorial College

Favorite thing about Athens:
Athens has a wonderful local food movement. I love going to the Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings or eating at restaurants like Jackie O's and Casa that source ingredients from local farmers. It creates a sense of connection to the community outside of campus.

What is something you have learned while at Ohio University that you would like to share with fellow Bobcats?

Make your own path! Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone to further your personal and intellectual development. If you're interested in a topic but the university doesn't offer a class, find a book at the library. If you're curious about a professor's research experience, set up a meeting to ask them questions. Create your own academic experience, instead of conforming to the curriculum others have followed.

Majors: English and Integrated Language Arts
Colleges: Honors Tutorial College and Patton College of Education

Favorite thing about Athens:
I love how Athens is its own little bubble away from the rest of the world. Living in a small town for the past three years has helped me learn to appreciate the little things that city life doesn’t have to offer, like going for a hike or taking a walk on the bike path.

What is something you have learned while at Ohio University that you would like to share with fellow Bobcats?

Never underestimate yourself! If you set your mind to something, you will find the resources and support you need here to help you achieve whatever you want to do.
